Accessibility in classroom games is not an afterthought; it must be a foundational design principle. For special education classrooms, ESL students, and non-verbal learners, standard text-heavy games often present insurmountable barriers. This is why we developed the "Touch Canvas" application.
Touch Canvas functions as a dynamic Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) board. The design philosophy centers around removing cognitive overhead and visual clutter, replacing them with predictable, tactile interfaces.
Every word and action within Touch Canvas is strictly mapped to a specific visual emoji or image. By doing this, we eliminate the need for complete reading fluency, allowing students to navigate complex categorical vocabularies through visual recognition. Furthermore, categories are rigorously color-coded (e.g., actions in yellow, descriptors in blue, navigation in green) to establish a subconscious mapping of grammatical structures.
High-contrast visual states and haptic/auditory feedback loops are essential for ensuring that interactions are explicitly confirmed. When a student selects a word, the button responds with a clear visual ripple, a distinct auditory cue ("pop," "bubble," or "laser"), and verbalizes the conjugated term, building confidence and agency in their communication.
